About Me

I’m Stephen Finch and I design and make furniture by hand using Scottish native hardwoods. The furniture I build is honest, approachable and uncluttered. Maybe that comes from growing up in the Peak District, a place of dramatic landscapes and people who get straight to the point. My workshop is in an interesting old WW2 building at Newbattle Abbey. Most of the time there’s a pot of coffee brewing, so please drop by and I’ll do my best to find you a clean mug.

A potted history

I trained at Jewel & Esk College and began my career at Woodschool near Jedburgh. I went on to become a Director of Real Wood Studios - a collective of furniture-makers specialising in the use of Scottish native hardwoods. After a decade in the Scottish Borders I moved back to Edinburgh to share workshop space with fellow furniture maker Tom Cooper at Newbattle Abbey Business Park, near Dalkeith. After three years there, I took the big step this year to set up my own workshop. Unit 10c is my new home and very much a work in progress.
