Warp & Weft - Cocktail Cabinet

A handmade elm drinks cabinet with woven wood doors panels inspired by Mid Century Modern design.

A handmade Mid Century Modern styled drinks cabinet. A feature of the design are the woven panel doors and burr elm handles. The name ‘Warp & Weft’ refers to the two components of weaving - the vertical warp and horizontal weft.

The cabinet is made from a matching pair of elm boards full of character grain and warm earthy tones. The wood grain flows around the cabinet in a seamless pattern thanks to the handcut dovetail joinery. Light coloured straight grained ash has been used for the doors and interior panels. The calmer ash compliments and balances the wild grain of the elm.

The door panels are a combination of sawn ash slats and smooth brass rods. The woven weft slats are cut from a single piece of ash.  Arranged in  order they show the transition of grain pattern and tone from light to pale peach. The smooth brass rod warps contrast with the sawn texture of the ash slats. The result is a repeating series of precise shadow lines across the panels. Traditional cabinet hinges and pegs in the base frame add more brass details.

The finishing touch is provided by a pair of burr elm handles which add a touch of natural edge to the piece.
